LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN 1977 A Nunsploitation Film 18+
Loosely based on the Letters of a Portuguese Nun first published anonymously by Claude Barbin in Paris in 1669, believed to be true, they became a written sensation. For years, they were attributed to a Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado who allegedly wrote them to her lover, a Parisian count. Today they are considered a work of epistolary fiction. A slice of 1970s Euro-sleaze from cult director Jesus 'Jess' Franco. 16-year-old Maria is forced into Serra D'Aires convent to save and purify her soul after being caught in a lovers embrace by a Father Vicente. However, her mother a poor god fearing woman could not possibly have known of the abuse her daughter would suffer at the hands of those in charge, who are secret Satan worshippers. Maria is tortured and raped by both sexes - including the horned beast himself before finally falling into the clutches of the unforgiving Inquisition. After reaching her lowest feeling abandoned by everyone, Maria has all but lost hope then she writes a letter to God.
Nunsploitation is a subgenre of exploitation film which had its peak in Europe in the 1970s. These films typically involve Christian nuns living in convents during the Middle Ages. The main conflict of the story is usually of a religious or sexual nature, such as religious oppression or sexual suppression due to living in celibacy. The Inquisition is another common theme. These films, although often seen as pure exploitation films, often contain criticism against religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular.
